It is hard to believe that 25 years ago, modern metal wine racking simply did not exist. If you wanted to store wine, you used bulky wood.
That all changed in 2001 when our founder Doug McCain asked a radical question. Wine labels are beautiful, so why are we hiding them in dusty bins? With that one idea, he invented the first label-forward, metal wine rack and completely disrupted the industry.
Taking that brilliant concept to the global stage took a massive collective effort. Our CEO, Charles Malek, has spent the last two decades leading our team as we evolved that core idea into high-end luxury architecture.
With VintageView officially hitting the quarter-century mark, our Associate Marketing Manager, Baylee, caught up with Charles to reflect on the milestone. Read on to hear about the early struggles of convincing builders to ditch wood, the inspiration behind new releases like Cognac Leather, and the vision for our next 25 years.
Part 1: Looking Back at the Legacy

When you first joined the VintageView journey, what was your personal "Aha!" moment when you realized just how game-changing the label-forward design was for the industry?
My first "Aha!" moment was actually before I even officially started! Back in 2008, our founder, Doug, invited me to a trade show in New York. At the time, there just wasn't anything else like it on the market; everything was traditional, cork-forward wood.
The amount of people that came up to our booth and said, "Oh my god, what a great idea. That is so innovative, that is so disruptive, it totally makes sense!" was incredible. Seeing how captivating the design was compared to what had always been done... I understood the power of it before my first official day.
In the early days, getting traditional builders to switch from bulky wood to sleek metal was a huge hurdle. What was the tipping point that finally won them over?
It really aligned with how the design of homes and restaurants was changing overall. Architecture was moving toward a more modern, open, and transparent look. Whether you look at architecture magazines or high-end lifestyle builds, everything was becoming brighter and more visible.
People wanted to "see behind the curtain." You see this with big open-concept rooms, and a wine storage system where you can actually see all the labels just goes hand-in-hand with that movement. We didn't just change wine storage; we grew alongside the modern design-forward movement.

We have been a part of so many stunning cellars worldwide over the last 25 years. Do you have an absolute favorite memory, project, or milestone so far?
That is a hard question! We’ve certainly done bigger, more grandiose cellars—like Guard and Grace Steakhouse or amazing wineries in DC—but my absolute favorite is local to us here in Denver: Osteria Marco on Larimer Street.
I was part of that project back around 2007 when they put in the floor-to-ceiling frames. It has so much visibility, and it still looks as good today as it did when we installed it. I love it because I can touch it, feel it, and proudly take people there for lunch or dinner and say, "This is VintageView." For me, it’s not necessarily the size of the project; it’s the feeling and the meaning behind it.
Part 2: The Future & The "Next 25"
How has the VintageView customer—whether it’s a DIYer or a Trade Pro—changed from when the company first started?
Consumers today are so much smarter about design. They spend the time to understand materials, finishes, angles, and minimalism.
Think about it like cars. Look at a car from 2007 versus today. Today, you have technology that stops you from hitting things, massive moonroofs, and seats that give you a massage! People simply expect more out of what they engage with—whether it’s their car, their kitchen appliances, or their wine rack. As humans, we continue to demand more from our environments, and at VintageView, we are constantly innovating to provide an even better, more premium experience for that modern consumer.
As we hit this 25-year milestone, what excites you the most about the future of wine cellar design?
What excites me most is that there are still so many opportunities we haven't even touched yet. If you had told me 10 years ago that we'd be doing acrylics, or Vino Pins, or all these custom finishes, I wouldn't have believed it.

With luxury launches like the Cognac Leather, where is the VintageView brand heading next? What is your vision for our next chapter?
Every industry evolves, and I love the fact that we are on the front side of that disruption. Competition makes us better. Programs like our custom Forged division are going to generate new products we haven't even thought of yet. There is no reason VintageView can't play an even bigger role in helping consumers display other items they are incredibly fond of, far beyond just wine.
My vision is continued premiumization. People in the wine industry are drinking better, not necessarily drinking more.
Going back to the car analogy: 25 years ago, you couldn't have imagined the market for a $200,000 souped-up AMG Mercedes, but today, people who want those fine goods and experiences are willing to invest in them. Our challenge is meeting those high-end consumers where they are.
It’s about collaboration. With projects like Forged, a client has a vision, and we partner with them to bring it to life—and often make it even better than they imagined. We are moving toward a future where we aren't just selling products; we are selling incredible, visionary projects.
