Redefining Restaurant Wine Storage with Modern Metal Systems
Osteria Marco, located in the historic Larimer Square of Denver, is one of Chef Frank Bonanno’s most iconic restaurants. Set in a converted basement space, the restaurant blends rustic Italian charm with a modern, high-energy atmosphere. The challenge was to create a wine display that matched the venue's prestige while working within the structural constraints of a subterranean setting.

The Challenge
When designing a wine storage solution for a busy restaurant like Osteria Marco, several factors had to be balanced:
- Space Optimization: The restaurant is located in a basement, where every square foot of floor space is premium.
- Visibility: The wine collection needed to be a focal point for diners, acting as a functional piece of art rather than just storage.
- Structural Integration: The design required a system that could reach from floor to ceiling without relying solely on wall mounting, as the layout featured glass partitions.
The Design Approach
The design team opted for a "floating" wine wall aesthetic. By utilizing floor-to-ceiling mounting systems, they were able to position the wine racks directly against glass walls, creating a transparent, high-impact display that can be viewed from multiple angles within the dining room.
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Racking System | W Series (Wall Series) |
| Mounting Hardware | Floor-to-Ceiling Frames (FCF) |
| Configuration | Single-bottle depth (1-deep) |
| Finish | Satin Black |
The Solution
By using W Series Wine Racks mounted on Floor to Ceiling Frames, the project achieved a sleek, minimalist look.
- Label-Forward Design: The signature VintageView label-forward orientation allows staff to quickly identify bottles while providing a stunning visual for guests.
- Satin Black Finish (discontinued finish): The choice of a Satin Black finish complemented the restaurant's industrial-chic decor, including the exposed brick and dark wood accents.
- Versatility: The single-bottle depth configuration ensured the display felt airy and didn't crowd the walkway, while still providing significant storage capacity.
The Results
The wine cellar at Osteria Marco has become more than just a storage unit; it is a defining feature of the restaurant's interior design. It has gained fame beyond the culinary world, frequently serving as a backdrop for high-end fashion photo shoots and becoming one of the most photographed "wine walls" in Denver.
"The wine wall at Osteria Marco perfectly captures the intersection of hospitality and design. It’s a functional storage solution that doubles as the restaurant's most compelling visual asset."
