Design Challenge
As with every TNAH project, creating a home that resonates with thousands of design professionals while seamlessly integrating cutting-edge products is a significant challenge. The wine cellar, strategically positioned just inside the main entrance, was key to achieving this goal.
This striking three-wall glass peninsula separates the dining area from the entryway, drawing the eye from multiple vantage points within the spacious great room. However, the modern home’s minimalist aesthetic and an angled ceiling presented unique design hurdles for the wine storage feature.
“The wine room just adds elegance to the home… just complements the entire space,” says Tim Unick, Sr. Project Manager for Sun West Custom Homes.
The Solution
VintageView’s Helix Wine Rack system proved to be the perfect solution, fulfilling both the design and capacity needs of the project. The helical bottle cradles provide a modern edge to label-forward storage, while the accompanying floor-to-ceiling posts maximize bottle capacity without sacrificing style.
Using Angled Brackets solved the ceiling problem — with stock items — too.
To further emphasize capacity and visual interest, a dedicated section features bottles elegantly overlapping one another. Meanwhile, the Evolution Wine Wall System, also mounted on a floor-to-ceiling post, anchors the back wall, showcasing bottles in the all-new Box configuration. This innovative design packs bottles efficiently in the center while maintaining label-forward presentation above and below.
The resulting wine room is a masterpiece, storing over 1,000 bottles with refined elegance.
“The Helix Wine Rack system against glass in just such a unique and creative way,” Unick says. “And we back it up with the Evolution Wine Wall, a floor-to-ceiling application that really bolsters the bottle count and adds an element of style. And there’s a box with the bottle stops. Creates ease of use and it looks fantastic.”
Design Approach
In a departure from the typically contemporary style of previous TNAH projects, Sun West Custom Homes embraced a cutting-edge design for the 2024 home that exuded warmth and comfort, inviting potential buyers to envision family life within its walls.
The strategic use of wood textures on walls and ceilings, along with a thoughtful layout that balanced openness with cozy room divisions, created an inviting atmosphere despite the home’s expansive scale. The wine cellar seamlessly integrated into this design ethos, adding an element of elegance and warmth that complemented the overall feel of the home. As Tim Unick, Sr. Project Manager for Sun West Custom Homes, notes, “The wine feature ties into this home just through elegance and warmth.”
Lesson Learned
Collaboration with a winery proved essential in curating a wine collection that resonated with the target market of potential buyers. Partnering with Dakota Shy Winery allowed Sun West to showcase a selection of wines that appealed to the discerning tastes of homeowners in the $10 million market, further enhancing the cellar’s allure. This collaboration highlights the importance of considering the wine selection itself as an integral part of the overall wine cellar design experience.
